[mood | Done!]
[music |The Protomen - The Will of One]

Provided I don't get screwed on a grade, I've just submitted the last piece of coursework necessary for my undergraduate degree. All that's left is to stand in some lines, commence (apparently), and get ready for some hot graduate school action in a month or so.

Updates:

Skeets has been replaced by Soul, a 60 GB video iPod. Though my old friend will be missed, my new friend is shiny, and can show me Futurama on the go. I think I've made it to Acceptance.

Got a new car several months ago (not sure how that didn't make an update). It's a 2006 Sonata, and I likes it!

I decided to forge into new territory (for me) and go to full bearded mode. After it stopped looking sad (polls are still open on this one), I think it turned out respectable.

Katie (previously mentioned as having been previously mentioned) was upgraded to "girlfriend" some time ago. I likes her too!

Here be a picture )

Played some poker, did some stuff, the world continued to spin.

Now, to sleep, so I can get started on all the stuff I've neglected this semester.

[music |Blind Guardian - Turn The Page]

Hi, my name is Aaron, and I.. I.. I like power metal.

Skeets, my iPod, appears to have died its final death on the floor of Davidson Hall. The sad iPod icon won't go away, and it's making very loud clicking noises.

And I've just been informed by my BIOS that one of my hard drives (the one with all the media on it) is preparing to fail at some unspecified time.

I am not having a good week with hard drive technology. Luckily, it's been a decent week otherwise.

[mood | rich!]
[music |Ratatat - Loud Pipes]

Last weekend, I learned the very important lesson that there can indeed be a vodka too foul for even a mixed drink. I should have realized that I made the prohibition against plastic containers for a reason.

This weekend, I went to the casino. A lot. 3 days in a row, in fact. Here's why I don't feel bad about that:

Friday:
Buy-in: $100
Cash out: $190-something

Saturday:
Buy-in: $60
Midpoint $150+
Cash out: $117

Sunday (today):
Buy-in: $100
Cash out: $248 (includes $15 from video poker)

That, my friends, is one hell of a 3-day tear. I'm starting to become concerned about the implications of this, considering that school starts up again next week, and it's going to be a busy semester.

In other pseudo-news, Katie (mentioned in passing a few times) is finally back in the country (specifically, in Erlanger). She's going to be in town for some apartment hunting, so hopefully we'll get to hang out for a while.

Also, the Mag Bar doesn't seem to be as bad as I was led to believe, although this was a Sunday night.

Now my eyes are trying to tell me that things are farther away than they are, which leads me to suspect that it's bedtime.

Poker lesson of the night [Aug. 5th, 2006|04:07 am]
[mood |sleeeepy]

If you have QQ, and it's time to showdown the cards, don't muck your hand without showing when you hear the word "straight" from across the table, but miss the word "missed" before it.

Yeah, I basically gave $30+ to the guy with Ace-high. :( Fortunately he busted out later, and I won it back and more.

On the plus side, I survived a $3/$6 Omaha Hi-Lo (with full kill) for a few rotations, and even made a profit from it!

Totals:
Buy-In: -$150
Cash out : $156 (there's a pattern developing here)
Video Poker: -$15

Happy birthday to me! [Aug. 2nd, 2006|12:09 am]
[mood | good]

Got a new car (not for my birthday, more of a graduation present) since the old one was the broken. It's pretty schweet, and I got a (relatively) good deal on insurance. Not much else is going on.

A quick summary of my last 3 sessions on the felt:

Session 1:
Buy-in -$100
Cash out $170
Video Poker: $10

Session 2:
Buy-in -$100
Cash out $0
Video Poker -$20

Here's where I buy and read Small Stakes Hold'Em, and realize a few places that I'm screwing up.

Session 3 (tonight):
Buy-in -$100
Cash out $106
Video Poker -$6

Huge payoff on two early hands, then went card dead (like 9/10 hands had either 2 or 4) and got bled back down to my buyin. In a rare wise decision, I cash out (this was after I failed to cash out when I was up $20)

Anyway, now I'm 23, I finish work tomorrow, and get to fence, after which point I'm on break until the 21st (woo!). Things are good.

ANOVA shows that CO2 level and mix temperature are the only significant factors [Jul. 18th, 2006|02:39 am]
[mood | sleepy]
[music |The Weakerthans - Plea From a Cat Named Virtue]

I hate bugs, but bugs seem to like my face.

I'm waiting, as always, to see if the perpetual promise I make myself that "things will be better next week" will come true. So far, it's actually looking good, since I may have a break between semesters for what may be the first time in a year or so. Now all I have to do is find something to do with that time other than slowly shifting to a 2nd-3rd shift sleep schedule.

That and, y'know, go to sleep.

I had such lofty aspirations for today, but not many of them were really fulfilled.

The plan:
Get dinner, go to the liquor store, maybe see a movie, come back, tie one on and maybe get some cleaning done.

What actually happened:
Get dinner, go the liquor store*, come home, clean up a little, fail to fix my old laptop, and finally give up on that and the cleaning.

Now I'm a little tired, entirely sober, having a mild allergic reaction, and smell faintly of solder. Huzzah!

*I ran into three people I know, in two distinct groups, one of whom I haven't seen in a very long time, while I was there.

[mood |drunk (surprise!), and see tex]
[music |Bottle Rocket - The Go Team!]

My poker forunte seems to be increasing (I'm up to $200 from $50 last week) as my mechanical fortune (my car broke twice last week, and the air conditioner in my house broke) decreases. If I were superstitious, I'd think something of that.

I, in addition to being drunk, am in a mood that I will describe as Janesing. I think the implication is clear, but as has been previously noted, my cognitive faculties may not bee in tip-top condition, as demonstrated by the fact that my newly invented term doest't really make sense, as Jones is not a first name in the same way that Jane is.

Upon further analysis, the term is not at all clear. To remove all ambiguity, I am lacking in the area of female interaction/companionship, and an feeling a keen desire to remedy said lack.

Ramble.

[music |DJ Format - The Place f. Chali 2Na & Akil]

If music were a woman, she and I would be trying all sorts of weird and new experimental stuff, potentially involving strange apparatus, and it would be very sweet.

Unfortunately, music is not a woman, and women who are women are somewhat scarce in the domain of my operation. At least I can listen to something interesting for now.

Summary-

Do: Try new music.

Don't: Start liking someone in a romantical context right before they go to another continent for two months.

HEYOOOOO [May. 22nd, 2006|02:35 am]
[mood | sleepy]

Every now and then when I'm sitting at the computer, I feel sort of like I'm sitting perpendicular to the way I would normally sit (also perpendicular to the ground, if that makes sense), and that my hands are detached from my body somehow. It tends to happen when I'm mostly sitting still, and it's mostly dark in the room.

I'm getting that now, only with the added feeling that my monitor has depth, in that the windows seem to be at different distances from me. It's weird, and not altogether comfortable.

Also, by way of friend Katie, I have discovered my new favorite high school mascot. The Lloyd High School Juggernauts. (note: They use a lame spartan-type guy for their actual logo, but the concept is quite awesome)

Well well well. I seem to be rather pleased with myself for some reason(s). (One of which may be tequila)

I was skeptical about working part time this semester and taking classes as well, but it seems to be working out well so far. I think the variety is stimulating. Or perhaps I'm more of a masochist than I realized. It is a mystery.

For the past few weeks, I have been feeling unaccountably a) competent with respect to work and other feats of mind, and b) non-icky with respect to the ladies. Both are somewhat of a reversal of fortune, and neither of which I am complaining about.

Faced with the unforunate prospect of sobering up while still conscious, I now retreat to the safe cottony arms of my bed.

A winner is not me

I did very well in the pool bouts (5-point matches used to determine seed). I won 4 of the 5, and the 5th would have been mine, but for a point the director missed.

I felt great going into the tournament itself, especially because I got a bye in the first round. Then I ran into a very quick wall named Samantha, and was eliminated, 8-15.

I still think it was a reasonably good performance. I'm glad I made a good showing in at least part of the event.

Will (Epee) and Josh (Foil) didn't do so well in their pools, and got eliminated about halfway through. Will had an especially tough time with his equipment, which kept failing inspection, and finally broke in his last match, ending a scoring streak.

Now I am tired and my toe hurts.

SATURDAY, SATURDAY, SATURDAY [Mar. 2nd, 2006|04:24 pm]
[mood | sick]
[music |Jenny Lewis w/ The Watson Twins -The Charging Sky]

This Saturday. It. Is. ON.

In a mere two days, yours truly will be competing in the sabre event of the Cory Stauble Memorial Open, at the Louisville Fencing Center.

SEE the action!

FEEL the excitement!

WATCH most of the water in my body drain out of me!

HOPE that I'm talking about sweat glands!

The rest of the gear I needed was obtained yesterday. The only things I have left to do are get my name put on my pants, and (ideally) finish killing whatever's causing this cold.

There are currently 6 people, including me, preregistered for the sabre event. I have absolutely no idea how many to expect for the event itself. It's pretty much a given that my stamina is going to run out, it's just a question of how many more matches they're expecting me to fence after that.

Wish me luck, skill, fortitude, and generous cash donations!

[music |Mary Prankster - Tempest]

I missed my window to go to bed with the remains of a mild buzz. The plan was 10:00.

I made the mistake of getting mentally caught up in a debate or two, and as a result, I haven't been able to tear myself away from the keyboard.

This weekend has been spent primarily on nothing. I won a few bucks on Full Tilt Poker, and handed some Persians their asses in Civ 3, but in the end, it was unfulfilling.

On the plus side, I finally ordered some fencing knickers (note: not panties. Also, GIS for "knickers" was a bad idea)
